Where should you take engagement photos in Las Vegas?

Red Rock Canyon is the answer most couples want, and it is a good one — about 25 minutes west of the Strip, with sandstone that holds color no other landscape here does. But from October 1 through May 31 the Scenic Drive requires a timed-entry reservation for arrivals between 8 am and 5 pm, so an engagement session there is either booked around that window or scheduled to enter after 5 pm. If that sounds like more logistics than you want, the dry lake bed, Floyd Lamb Park and Springs Preserve all photograph beautifully and none of them require a reservation.

Couples ask me this more than anything else, usually as though there is one right answer. There is not. There is a right answer for how you two actually are together, what time of year you are booking, and how far you are willing to drive on the evening of your session.

What are the best engagement photo locations in Las Vegas?

Four locations do most of the work in this valley, and they are genuinely different from each other — not four versions of the same desert.

Red Rock Canyon is the one people picture. The sandstone genuinely does something no other landscape here does — in the last hour of light the walls go warm and amber, and the light falls softly across faces instead of raking across them. The paths near the road are level gravel, so nobody is scrambling up a rock face in nice shoes.

The dry lake bed is the opposite instinct. It strips the frame down to two things, ground and sky, which leaves the two of you as the only subject in it. It is also the flattest, easiest terrain in the valley. There is no shade at all, which is exactly why sessions there get scheduled tight against sunrise or sunset.

Floyd Lamb Park is the choice when you do not want your engagement photos to look like the desert. Old trees, real grass, water, and light that comes down through a canopy rather than straight across open ground. It is at its best in spring and fall — the trees are bare in deep winter.

Springs Preserve is green in the middle of the desert, paved and level throughout — the gentlest option here.

Do you need a permit or reservation for Red Rock Canyon?

For the Scenic Drive, yes — a timed-entry reservation is required from October 1 through May 31 for any vehicle entering between 8 am and 5 pm. They are booked at Recreation.gov, they sell out on good weekends, and there is a per-vehicle entry fee separate from the reservation.

There is a way around it that happens to suit us anyway. A vehicle that comes through the fee station after 5 pm does not need a reservation, and in October the Scenic Drive stays open until 7 pm. Since almost every engagement session I photograph starts in the hour before sunset, entering after 5 pm is usually what we were going to do regardless.

That does change in late fall. Once the clocks go back on Sunday, November 1, sunset in Las Vegas drops to around 4:45 pm — which is before the 5 pm cutoff, so a November golden-hour session at Red Rock does need a reservation. This is the single most common thing couples do not know when they message me about a fall date, and it is worth checking before you settle on a location.

If reservations sound like a headache, that is a completely reasonable reason to pick somewhere else. The dry lake bed and Floyd Lamb Park have no such system.

What about engagement photos on the Las Vegas Strip?

The Strip is the first idea for a lot of couples, especially people flying in, and I want to be straight about the trade-off. It is loud, it is crowded at the hours that photograph well, and the casinos are private property with their own rules about professional photography. What you get in exchange is a backdrop nobody could mistake for anywhere else on earth.

If the two of you met here, got engaged here, or have some real tie to the city, that is worth something. If you just want the photographs to look beautiful, the desert an hour later will do more for you. The middle path people rarely consider is the Fremont side of downtown, about 15 minutes from the Strip — far less crowded, and just as unmistakably Las Vegas.

What time of day should you book?

The hour before sunset, almost always. The desert light goes warm and low, backlighting works, and the harsh overhead quality that makes midday photographs unflattering is gone.

The practical version of that changes across the year:

In summer the honest recommendation is to flip it. The hour after sunrise is the same quality of light at a temperature you can actually stand, and the desert is empty at that hour.

How far ahead should you book an engagement session?

Spring and fall evenings fill fastest, because that is when the light and the temperature cooperate at the same time. If you have a date in mind — an announcement, a save-the-date deadline, a wedding timeline that needs the photographs by a certain week — reach out earlier than feels necessary.

If there is a proposal involved rather than a session after the fact, reach out well in advance so the location, the timing and the approach can be planned quietly around what you have in mind.

What does a session actually include?

What if you have no idea how to pose?

Almost nobody does. I worked as a fashion model for years before moving behind the camera, which means I have been on the receiving end of vague direction and know exactly how useless "just look natural" is. So instead you get things to do — walk toward each other, whisper something, keep moving. Movement solves the stiffness that ruins most couples photographs.

The first ten minutes usually feel slightly strange, and then they stop. That is the normal shape of the hour.

So which one should you pick?

If you want the photographs people expect from Las Vegas, and you can handle a reservation or start after 5 pm: Red Rock Canyon. If you want something quiet and cinematic with no logistics at all: the dry lake bed. If you would rather your engagement photos not look like the desert: Floyd Lamb Park in spring or fall. And if one of you has mobility concerns, or you want shade and paved paths: Springs Preserve.
