Newborn photography is not really about the baby holding a pose. It is about capturing that special, precious newborn bubble that only happens once — baby asleep on your chest, the way their hands stay curled, the fact that you are all still learning each other.
When should newborn photos be taken?
Newborns sleep deeply and are easy to settle. They still curl into the tucked, folded positions that people picture when they think of newborn photographs — that posture is a leftover from the womb and it fades within a few weeks. And baby acne, which is extremely common and completely harmless, usually appears around week three.
There is no wrong answer here — a session at ten days and a session at six weeks are just different photographs. If you are past two weeks and wondering whether you missed it, you did not.
Book during pregnancy. The usual approach is to reserve a rough window around your due date, then confirm the exact day once the baby arrives. Nobody expects a newborn to keep an appointment.
Should the session be at home or in a studio?
Most Las Vegas families choose home, and it is usually the right call.
At home, nothing has to happen. You are not dressing a five-day-old and driving across the valley. The room is already warm, the feeding chair is where it always is, and if the session pauses for forty minutes because someone is hungry, it pauses. Photographs made in your own house also look like your actual life — the light through your window, your bed, your hallway — which is exactly what you will want to see in fifteen years.
The studio makes sense in two situations: your home has very little natural light, or you specifically want a cleaner, controlled backdrop with nothing of the house in frame. It is in Skye Canyon, on the northwest side, and kept at about 80°F for newborn sessions.
What actually happens during a newborn session?
The session is baby-led. That phrase gets used loosely, so here is what it means in practice: nothing is forced, and the hour bends around what the baby needs.
Melyssa arrives, gets the room warm, and finds the best light in the house — usually the largest window, often in a bedroom. Then she waits. Feeding happens when the baby wants to feed. Changing happens when it needs to happen. In between, she photographs: the details first, then the two of you, then the whole family if there are siblings.
Older siblings are a good thing, not a complication. Melyssa spent over twelve years as a nanny before she was a photographer, and a three-year-old who is either fascinated or completely uninterested in the new baby is one of the most honest photographs of that week you will ever get.
She is never going to put your baby into a pose it does not fall into on its own. Safety comes before any particular shot, always.

How do you prepare for a newborn session at home?
Very little, and less than you think.
- Warm the room — warmer than is comfortable for you. A warm baby sleeps.
- Pick the window — whichever room has the most natural light, whatever else is in it. Melyssa will work around the furniture.
- Keep bedding plain — white or neutral. Busy patterns date a photograph immediately.
- Have a spare outfit — for the baby, and honestly for you.
- A full feed 30 to 45 minutes before we start — a full baby is a sleepy baby, and a sleepy baby is the whole session.
- Do not tidy the whole house — one room, near one window. That is the entire set.

Newborn dates are held loosely by nature, so the sooner a rough window is on the calendar the better. Many families book maternity and newborn together and photograph the same season from both sides.
