Do you need a permit for family photos at a Las Vegas park?
· 8 min read · by Melyssa Silva

Which government owns the park decides the answer. A paid portrait session in an unincorporated Clark County park, Sunset Park and Wetlands Park included, requires a Clark County film permit: no permit fee, a $45 processing fee paid online, $1 million of insurance and a minimum of ten calendar days' notice. The City of Las Vegas publishes no photography policy for its parks at all, so a handheld session at Floyd Lamb Park meets none of the nine conditions the City lists for a Park Special Event Use Permit.
Two parks twenty minutes apart in the same valley can sit under completely different rules, and nothing at either gate tells you which one you are standing in. That is the part families get wrong — not the permit itself, but which office the park belongs to.
Silva Studios Photography keeps a photo permits guide for every Las Vegas location it shoots, with the agency, the fee and the lead time for each one, and the session gets planned around whichever rule applies to the park you pick. A family session is $500 for two hours with 20 professionally edited images.
Which Las Vegas parks require a photography permit?
Clark County parks require a film permit for a paid session, City of Las Vegas parks have no published photography rule, and Springs Preserve requires an appointment and a written agreement before the session.
| Park | Agency | Paid session permit | Cost | Lead time | Entry fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunset Park and other county parks | Clark County | Required | $45 processing fee | 10 calendar days | Free |
| Clark County Wetlands Park | Clark County | Required, stated plainly | $45 processing fee | 10 calendar days | Free |
| Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs | City of Las Vegas | Not published | Not published | 30 days if an event permit applies | $6 per vehicle, card only |
| Springs Preserve | Las Vegas Valley Water District | By appointment, written agreement | Not published | Scheduled through Group Sales | Admission per person |
Does a paid photo session in a Clark County park need a film permit?
Clark County requires a film permit for any paid still photography in unincorporated Clark County, and the county's own film permit FAQ answers the exemption question with a flat "there are no exemptions or exceptions from the film permit process." The FAQ states that a film permit is necessary to film any commercial photography, still photography, music video, documentary footage, motion picture or television show in unincorporated Clark County.
The permit itself carries no fee. What it carries is a $45 processing fee that can only be paid online, an insurance requirement of $1,000,000 naming Clark County and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as additional insureds, and a filing deadline of no fewer than ten calendar days before the first day of shooting. The county also does not issue permits for filming on federal or state recognized holidays, which takes Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day off the calendar.
One honest gap is worth naming: Clark County Parks and Recreation publishes nothing about how the film permit applies to a two-person portrait session, and the county parks rules page does not mention photography at all. The film permit division's wording is what governs, and it says there are no exceptions.
Federal land runs on an entirely different rule, and the nearest example contradicts itself across three BLM pages — the fees, the conflicting guidance and the timed-entry window are laid out in Do you need a permit for photos at Red Rock Canyon?.
Does Floyd Lamb Park require a photography permit?
Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs belongs to the City of Las Vegas, and the City publishes no photography permit requirement for its parks. The City's Park Special Events Policies Handbook lists nine conditions that trigger a Park Special Event Use Permit: attendance above a picnic area's capacity or 75 people, a wedding or reception, amplified sound, collecting money on City property, temporary structures such as tents or stages, amusement devices, interrupting park roads or lots, inviting or notifying the general public, and using a park area in a manner other than its specified recreational use.
Photography appears on none of those nine. A handheld session that collects no money on site and puts up nothing meets no listed trigger, which is a reading of the handbook rather than a published permission, and the last trigger is open-ended enough to cover almost anything. Where an event permit does apply, the City takes a $50 refundable deposit at booking and recommends applying 30 days ahead.
Entry at Floyd Lamb Park is $6 per vehicle, payable by debit or credit card at the gatehouse, with a $50 household yearly pass or $25 for ages 50 and over. The park is at (702) 229-8100 and park special events at (702) 229-1087 if you want a specific date confirmed. Drive time, terrain and best light are on the Floyd Lamb Park location page.
Do you need a permit at Clark County Wetlands Park?
Clark County Wetlands Park states the requirement outright: photographers charging clients for photo shoots within Wetlands Park require a film permit to do business within the park. No other local park puts it in writing that plainly.
Wetlands Park also states that other special uses, including tour guides, weddings and private parties, are not authorized at this time. Paid portraits with a film permit are allowed; a ceremony is not. Entry is free, the trails and trailhead parking are open dawn to dusk, and drones are prohibited. Pond maintenance is closing some Nature Preserve trails from September 2026 into February 2027, so the trail matters more than usual this winter.
Can you book a photo session at Springs Preserve?
Springs Preserve permits commercial filming and photography by appointment at its own discretion, and requires a license, permit, facilities agreement or written agreement before the session takes place. Fees are required but not published, and a certificate of insurance naming the Springs Preserve as additional insured is required as well. Group Sales handles the scheduling at (702) 822-8779.
Springs Preserve also charges a separate fee for a personal photo shoot of more than 20 people, scheduled in advance and paid in full beforehand. The bigger constraint is the clock: Springs Preserve is open Thursday through Monday from 9am to 4pm with last entry at 3pm, which shuts the gate before golden hour every day of the year.
Who is responsible for the park permit, you or the photographer?
The photographer holds the park permit, because the permit exists for the person being paid rather than for the family in the frame. The Clark County film permit application asks for the insurance certificate and the production details, neither of which a family hiring a photographer would have.
That makes it a fair question to ask out loud before booking anyone. Silva Studios Photography shoots family, maternity and newborn sessions across Las Vegas, Summerlin, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Enterprise and Paradise, and the location conversation happens before the date is set, because at several of these parks the permit deadline is ten days and the gate closes earlier than the light.
How do November park hours line up with sunset in Las Vegas?
Sunset in Las Vegas falls at 4:41pm on November 4, 2026 and 4:26pm on November 30, 2026, according to the US Naval Observatory, which still leaves golden hour inside Floyd Lamb Park's 5pm winter close and nowhere near the 11pm close at most county parks. Floyd Lamb keeps winter hours of 8am to 5pm from October through March, and the 8am opening is after sunrise year-round, so a sunrise session there is impossible.
| Park | Closing time, October to March | Nov 4 sunset, 4:41pm | Nov 30 sunset, 4:26pm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most Clark County parks | 11pm | Clears easily | Clears easily |
| Floyd Lamb Park | 5pm | Tight but workable | Tight but workable |
| Springs Preserve | 4pm, last entry 3pm | Closed before sunset | Closed before sunset |
The National Weather Service puts the normal high in Las Vegas at 74°F on November 1 and 60°F by November 30, with normal lows falling from 53°F to 42°F across the same month. A late-afternoon session in late November wants a jacket for the children between frames.
What is the simplest way to book a family session in a Las Vegas park?
Pick the park first, then let its permit rule and its closing time set the date and the arrival time. A county park costs nothing to enter and ten days of lead time on the permit; a City park costs $6 at the gate and closes at five all winter.
If a park's paperwork or its gate does not suit your date, the valley has free alternatives with no closing time to work around, and the shortlist is in Where are the best places to take family photos in Las Vegas?.
