Where can you take photos in Las Vegas in the winter?
· 7 min read · by Melyssa Silva

Winter photo sessions in Las Vegas work best at Lake Mead, the dry lake bed, Floyd Lamb Park and Red Rock Canyon's Scenic Drive, and the thing that decides between them is closing time, not weather. December sunset in Las Vegas falls between 4:26pm and 4:36pm, which puts the warmest hour of light between roughly 3:30pm and 4:30pm. A 3:30pm start finishes inside Red Rock's 5pm winter gate, and arrives too late for Springs Preserve, which takes its last entry at 3pm.
The winter problem in Las Vegas is not cold. The December normal high at Harry Reid International Airport is 56.9 degrees, according to NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals — a jacket, not an obstacle. The problem is that four of the valley's best locations lock their gates before or barely after the sun goes down, each at a different hour.
Silva Studios Photography books outdoor sessions around the closing time of the specific location, which is why a winter date gets set at a time rather than a vague late afternoon. Every location Melyssa shoots, with its drive time and terrain, is on the locations page, and the permit rules for each agency are on photo permits.
What time is sunset in Las Vegas in the winter?
Sunset in Las Vegas falls between 4:26pm and 5:34pm across the winter, and the earliest sunset of the year is December 5. Daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026, which drops sunset from 5:55pm on October 22 to 4:44pm overnight.
| Date | Las Vegas sunset | Hour before sunset |
|---|---|---|
| November 1, 2026 | 4:44pm | 3:44–4:44pm |
| December 1, 2026 | 4:26pm | 3:26–4:26pm |
| December 21, 2026 (solstice) | 4:29pm | 3:29–4:29pm |
| February 1, 2027 | 5:07pm | 4:07–5:07pm |
| February 28, 2027 | 5:34pm | 4:34–5:34pm |
Sunrise and sunset times are from timeanddate.com for Las Vegas. The solstice on December 21 gives the valley 9 hours and 42 minutes of daylight, about five hours shorter than the June solstice.
That early sunset is the quiet advantage of a winter session. A toddler photographed at 3:30pm in December is still in a reasonable mood; the same child at 7:30pm in June is not.
Does Red Rock Canyon close before sunset in the winter?
Red Rock Canyon's 13-mile Scenic Drive is open 6am to 5pm from November through February, so in November and December the last hour of light finishes before the gate closes, and in February it does not. The Bureau of Land Management publishes those hours, and they shift to 6am to 7pm in March.
Run the two numbers against each other and the months separate cleanly. On December 1 the sun sets at 4:26pm and the gate closes at 5pm, leaving room to pack up and drive out. On February 1 the sun sets at 5:07pm, seven minutes after the gate has already closed, and by February 28 sunset is 5:34pm.
A timed entry reservation is also required for the Scenic Drive between October 1 and May 31 for any entry between 8am and 5pm, booked through Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777. Arriving without one at 3pm in December means not getting in at all. Red Rock Canyon sits 17 miles west of the Strip on State Route 159, about 25 minutes from most of the valley; the paths are on the Red Rock Canyon location page.
The Red Rock Overlook on State Route 159 keeps the same hours but needs no reservation and charges no fee, though parking there is limited.
Which Las Vegas photo locations stay open for winter golden hour?
Lake Mead, the dry lake bed and your own home are the three Las Vegas options with no closing time that cuts a winter session short. Each of the gated locations has a different cutoff, and the table below is the whole decision.
| Location | Winter closing time | Works for a 3:30pm December session? |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Mead, Redstone | No posted closing time | Yes |
| The dry lake bed | No gate | Yes |
| Red Rock Scenic Drive | 5pm, November through February | Yes, with a timed entry reservation |
| Floyd Lamb Park | Open, but the trees are bare | Yes, with bare branches |
| Springs Preserve | 4pm, last entry 3pm | No |
| Valley of Fire | Sunrise to sunset; closed December 1–14 | Not in the first half of December |
Lake Mead solves the most problems at once. Entry is $25 per vehicle and the park is cashless, card only. No photography permit is needed for a group of eight or fewer using hand-carried equipment, and drones are prohibited throughout. The red sandstone at Redstone, about an hour out on Northshore Road, is the same color as Red Rock with a half-mile loop of level sand and almost none of the traffic — see the Lake Mead location page.
The dry lake bed is about 30 minutes northeast, completely flat and hard-packed, which makes it the easiest terrain in the valley for a stroller or a new walker. There is no shade there, which matters in July and not at all in December.
Which Las Vegas locations close entirely in December?
Valley of Fire State Park closes to all visitors from December 1 through December 14 every year, and Nevada State Parks prohibits photo shoots outright during that closure. The closure admits nobody, including anyone arriving on foot, so a session booked for the first two weeks of December has to be somewhere else.
Day-use entry at Valley of Fire is $10 per Nevada vehicle and $15 per out-of-state vehicle, and a paid portrait session there needs a permit filed 30 days ahead — the full cost is in Do you need a permit for photos at Valley of Fire?.
Springs Preserve is open Thursday through Monday from 9am to 4pm with last entry at 3pm, so it closes before sunset every day of the winter. Commercial photography there is by appointment only, at the Preserve's discretion and with fees, through Group Sales at 702-822-8779. Springs Preserve closes on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and Red Rock's Scenic Drive shuts at noon on both.
Is it too cold for photos in Las Vegas in the winter?
Las Vegas winter afternoons are mild enough for an outdoor session in a coat, with a December normal high of 56.9 degrees and a January normal high of 58.5 degrees. Those figures come from NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Harry Reid International Airport.
The normal December low is 39.6 degrees and the normal January low is 40.5 degrees, and both arrive overnight rather than during a 3:30pm session. The July normal high is 104.5 degrees, and July is the month that actually restricts outdoor sessions here.
What the cold does change is layers. A family session runs two hours, and the back half of a late December session loses light and warmth together, so the warmest coats belong in the car for the end rather than the start.
A family session with Silva Studios Photography is $500 for two hours at an outdoor location of your choice, with 20 professionally edited high-resolution images delivered in a private online gallery. A maternity session is $350 for one hour with 15 edited images. Melyssa picks the winter location around its gate hours and the actual sunset time for your date, across Las Vegas, Summerlin, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Enterprise and Paradise. See what a family session includes, or check your date — the number is (702) 473-0832, Monday through Sunday, 9am to 7pm.
When should you book a winter session in Las Vegas?
Book a Las Vegas winter session before the holiday weekends fill, because the usable window on any winter day is roughly 90 minutes wide and it is the same 90 minutes for everyone. In June a photographer can run two sessions an evening; in December there is one slot a day worth having.
