When should you book holiday family photos in Las Vegas?
· Updated · 7 min read · by Melyssa Silva

Book a Las Vegas holiday session for the first half of November, which means reserving the date in October. Daylight saving time ends at 2 am on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and sunset in Las Vegas drops from 5:46 pm on October 31 to 4:45 pm the very next day. A session on or before November 17 leaves the one-to-two-week gallery turnaround, plus time to order and address cards, ahead of the postal send-by date in the third week of December.
Two different questions hide inside this one. Some people are asking when the weather and the light are right for holiday photographs in Las Vegas, and some are asking how late they can leave it and still get cards in the mail. The two answers land in the same fortnight, for completely unrelated reasons, which is the useful part.
Silva Studios Photography delivers a private gallery within one to two weeks of the session, so the date on your calendar and the date on your cards are about two weeks apart — that number is what the rest of this post counts backward from. You can see what a family session includes before you pick a day.
Why is the first half of November the right window?
The first half of November is the last stretch of the year when Las Vegas still has warm afternoon light before 4:45 pm and normal highs between 74°F and 67°F. After that both numbers fall together, and they fall faster here than most people expect.
October is the more comfortable month and I say so in When should you book fall family photos in Las Vegas? — but October photographs read as fall, not as holiday. Bare branches, low raking light and a coat in the frame are what makes an image look like December. Early November is where the desert finally looks the part while the session is still an ordinary, pleasant afternoon rather than an endurance exercise.
What happens to the light after daylight saving time ends?
Sunset in Las Vegas moves from 5:46 pm on Saturday, October 31 to 4:45 pm on Sunday, November 1, 2026, then slides to roughly 4:26 pm from late November through mid-December. That is the earliest sunset of the whole year, and it arrives weeks before the solstice.
The winter solstice on December 21, 2026 is the shortest day, with sunrise at 6:48 am and sunset at 4:29 pm, but the sun is already setting earlier than that by the end of November. Golden hour is the hour before sunset, so a mid-December session has to begin by about 3:30 pm. In practice that rules out weekdays for most families: school pickup and the end of a workday both sit inside the only usable light of the day.
How cold does a Las Vegas holiday session actually get?
A Las Vegas afternoon in the first half of November carries a normal high between 74°F on November 1 and 67°F on November 15, and by Christmas the normal high is 56°F with a normal low of 39°F. Those figures come from the National Weather Service Las Vegas climate book, on the 1991–2020 normals.
The valley cools off steeply through November rather than gradually, which is the detail that catches people out:
| Date | Normal high | Normal low | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 1 | 74°F | 53°F | 4:45 pm |
| November 15 | 67°F | 47°F | 4:33 pm |
| November 30 | 60°F | 42°F | 4:26 pm |
| December 25 | 56°F | 39°F | 4:31 pm |
A normal high of 74°F on November 1 and 60°F on November 30 is a fourteen-degree slide inside one month. None of those temperatures cancels a session. What they change is how long a four-year-old stays cheerful outdoors once the sun is behind the mountains, and in December the temperature is dropping at exactly the hour we are photographing.
What is the timeline from session date to cards in the mail?
Count backward from the mailing date, not forward from today. USPS publishes its holiday send-by dates each fall at usps.com/holiday, and in recent years the First-Class Mail send-by date has fallen around December 17.
| Step | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Session | On or before November 17 | Leaves slack before the light and the calendar both tighten |
| Gallery delivered | One to two weeks later | Silva Studios delivers a private online gallery in one to two weeks |
| Cards ordered and printed | Early December | Printer turnaround varies — ask the printer you use for their date |
| Cards mailed | Around December 17 | The USPS First-Class send-by date in recent years |
Booking a two-hour family session in early November rather than early December is worth about three weeks of slack in the card timeline. A family session is $500 for two hours at an outdoor setting of your choice and 20 professionally edited high-resolution images, and the images arrive as digital files you can send straight to any card printer.
Which Las Vegas locations still work in November and December?
Red Rock Canyon needs a timed-entry reservation from October 1 through May 31 for any entry between 8 am and 5 pm, and the Scenic Drive itself closes at 5 pm from November through February. Reservations are released on Recreation.gov 30 days ahead at 7 am Pacific, which means a Red Rock holiday session is planned around a reservation window rather than around your Saturday.
Red Rock is about twenty-five minutes west of the Strip and the hour before sunset there is still the warmest light in the valley. In December the hour before sunset at Red Rock ends at 4:29 pm and the gate closes at 5 pm, so the timing is tight but workable — as long as somebody claimed the reservation a month earlier.
Floyd Lamb Park is about twenty minutes north and behaves differently in the two months. Floyd Lamb Park holds its color into November and then goes bare in deep winter, so a November session there still gets old trees and real grass while a January one gets branches.
Springs Preserve is about ten minutes from downtown, paved and level throughout, and it is a ticketed attraction with its own photography rules, so that location gets confirmed at booking. The dry lake bed is about thirty minutes northeast, completely flat and completely shadeless — the shade problem that governs a July session simply stops existing in December, which makes winter the lake bed's best season.
An in-home session is the other honest answer for December. Your own living room is warm, it has no gate hours, and it does not care that the sun set at 4:26 pm.
What if you cannot book until December?
Book a weekend afternoon and start at 3 pm. A December session in Las Vegas is entirely workable, it is just an appointment with a hard edge on it, because the light is gone by 4:30 pm and there is no second try later in the day.
If relatives are flying in for the holiday and the session has grown from four people to fourteen, the headcount changes which locations are even available — How do you plan extended family photos in Las Vegas? covers the permit thresholds that start at eight people.
Dress the session for a 56°F afternoon that is falling toward a 39°F evening. Layers that look deliberate — a coat, a knit, boots — photograph better in December than a summer outfit somebody is quietly shivering in, and What should you wear for family photos in Las Vegas? covers how that reads on camera. If the cards are already a lost cause by then, photograph anyway and use the images for the new year. A January print on the wall is worth more than a December card you did not send.
The short version
Pick a date in the first half of November and reserve it in October. Sunset falls off a cliff on November 1, the normal high loses fourteen degrees across that month, and the gallery takes one to two weeks, so early November is the last comfortable date that still clears a mid-December mailing. If December is where you have landed, take a weekend, start at 3 pm, and dress everyone for the cold.
Silva Studios Photography answers booking messages between 9am and 7pm, seven days a week, at (702) 473-0832, and I would rather tell you what a specific Saturday will look like than have you guess at it. Sessions cover Las Vegas, Summerlin, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Enterprise and Paradise.
