Where are the best places to take family photos in Las Vegas?
· 7 min read · by Melyssa Silva

Floyd Lamb Park, Red Rock Canyon, the dry lake bed and Clark County Wetlands Park are the four that hold up, and from October 1 they stop being interchangeable. Floyd Lamb Park drops to 8 a.m.–5 p.m. on October 1, Red Rock Canyon requires a timed-entry reservation between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from that same date, and Springs Preserve closes at 4 p.m. year-round with last entry at 3 p.m. The best place for family photos in Las Vegas is whichever beautiful place is still unlocked when the light turns good.
Almost every list of Las Vegas photo locations is a list of pretty backdrops. Pretty is the easy part in this valley. The part that decides whether you get the photographs is a gate, a closing time and a reservation window, and those three things all move on the first of October.
Silva Studios Photography books family sessions as two hours at an outdoor setting of your choice, $500 for 20 professionally edited high-resolution images, and the start time gets set against that date's sunset rather than against a convenient hour. Picking the location and picking the clock is one decision here, not two.
Which Las Vegas family photo locations are actually worth the drive?
Four locations earn it: Floyd Lamb Park, Red Rock Canyon, the dry lake bed and Clark County Wetlands Park.
| Location | Cost | Hours | Golden hour, October to February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floyd Lamb Park | $6 per vehicle, card only | 8 a.m.–5 p.m. October–March; 8 a.m.–8 p.m. April–September | Works in November and December, when the light arrives before 5 p.m. |
| Red Rock Canyon | $20 per vehicle | Scenic Drive 6 a.m.–7 p.m. in October, 6 a.m.–5 p.m. November–February | Works in October; a 5 p.m. gate closure makes November onward very tight |
| Dry lake bed | Free | No gate, no closing time | Works every month of the year |
| Clark County Wetlands Park | Free | Trails open dawn to dusk daily | Works every month of the year |
| Springs Preserve | $9.95 adult, $4.95 child 3–17 for Nevada residents | Thursday–Monday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., last entry 3 p.m. | Never — the Preserve closes hours before golden hour |
The last row is the one that surprises people, and it is the reason this post exists.
What changes at Las Vegas photo locations on October 1?
Two of the valley's best locations change their access rules on the same morning, October 1.
Floyd Lamb Park switches from summer hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to winter hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the City of Las Vegas. Red Rock Canyon begins requiring a timed-entry reservation for vehicle entry to the Scenic Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and that requirement runs through May 31. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov, and the Scenic Drive itself is a one-way 13-mile loop, so leaving is not a quick turn back toward the gate.
Neither change is a problem in October. Sunset in Las Vegas falls at 6:23 p.m. on October 1, so the last hour of light at Red Rock begins around 5:49 p.m., after the reservation window has closed and while the Scenic Drive is still open until 7 p.m. October is the one month where the canyon is both comfortable and unhurried, with a 1991–2020 normal high of 81.2°F.
November is where it gets difficult. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, sunset moves to 4:44 p.m., and the Red Rock Scenic Drive closes at 5 p.m. from November through February. A family standing on the loop at sunset has roughly sixteen minutes to drive 13 miles of one-way road. That is not a session I would plan.
Can you take family photos at Springs Preserve at golden hour?
No — Springs Preserve is open Thursday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with last entry at 3 p.m., and golden hour in Las Vegas never starts before 3:46 p.m. in any month of the year.
A 4 p.m. closing time makes Springs Preserve a midday location by definition, which is a real option and a different one. The 180-acre site is paved and level throughout, shaded by mature planting, and the botanical garden gives you green in a city that does not have much of it. Midday light under a canopy is soft rather than harsh, so the photographs work — they simply will not have the low, warm, sideways light people usually mean when they picture family portraits.
Two other rules matter before you plan a session there. Professional photo shoots at Springs Preserve are arranged through the Group Sales department at 702-822-8758, not booked at the ticket window. Pets are not permitted anywhere on the property, and only service animals are allowed — worth knowing in advance, and Can you bring your dog to a family photo session in Las Vegas? covers which valley locations do allow one.
Which Las Vegas location is easiest with a toddler or a stroller?
The dry lake bed is the easiest terrain in the valley, and Floyd Lamb Park is the easiest that also has shade.
The lake bed is dead flat and hard-packed, with no curbs, no steps and nothing to run off toward, which is why I suggest it for families with a child who has just started walking. There is also no shade at all, no restroom and no gate, so the session gets scheduled tight to sunset rather than built around an afternoon.
Floyd Lamb Park is 680 acres about twenty minutes north, with old trees, wide lawns, ponds and level paths. Entry is $6 per vehicle and the gatehouse at 9200 Tule Springs Road is cashless, so bring a card. Four free entry days remain in 2026: September 26, October 30, November 26 and December 25.
Clark County Wetlands Park is free and open dawn to dusk every day, across 2,900 acres that include a 210-acre Nature Preserve and five separate trailheads. Free and open at sunset is a rare combination in this valley, and it is the reason the Wetlands is the fallback when a November date has to work.
How do you choose a location for a Las Vegas family session?
Start from the date and the daylight, then pick the Las Vegas location that is still open at that hour.
For an October date, Red Rock Canyon is the best light in Las Vegas and the drive is about twenty-five minutes west of the Strip. For a November or December date, Floyd Lamb Park and the dry lake bed are the two that reliably hold, because a 4:44 p.m. sunset lands inside Floyd Lamb's 5 p.m. closing and the lake bed has no closing time at all. For a session with a grandparent, a wheelchair or a stroller, Springs Preserve is the most accessible surface in the valley and the session becomes a midday one.
Silva Studios Photography photographs families across Las Vegas, Summerlin, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Enterprise and Paradise, and the location is yours to choose rather than a fixed studio address — which is exactly why the gate hours above are part of the booking conversation and not an afterthought. You can see all six locations, with drive times and terrain notes, on the locations page.
One more rule catches people out at Red Rock specifically, and it is separate from the timed-entry reservation: Do you need a permit for photos at Red Rock Canyon? explains when a photography permit applies on federal land and when it does not.
The short version
Pick October and shoot at Red Rock Canyon. Pick November or December and shoot at Floyd Lamb Park or the dry lake bed. Pick Springs Preserve when accessibility or shade matters more than golden light, and book it through Group Sales on a Thursday through Monday.
Silva Studios Photography answers booking messages from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, at (702) 473-0832. If you have a date in mind and want to know which gates are still open at sunset that week, that is a two-minute conversation and it is worth having before you fall in love with a backdrop.
