When should you book a newborn photographer in Las Vegas?

Silva Studios Photography journal cover reading "When should you book a newborn photographer in Las Vegas?"

Book your newborn photographer in the second trimester, by about 28 weeks of pregnancy. A newborn session happens five to fourteen days after birth, and a healthy baby can arrive anywhere across the 35 days between 37 0/7 and 42 0/7 weeks of gestation, so what you are reserving is a window around your due date rather than a day on the calendar. Booking at 28 weeks leaves roughly nine weeks of lead time before the earliest full-term arrival.

A newborn session is not booked the way a family session is booked, and the difference catches people off guard. A family session gets a date. A newborn session gets a window, and the window becomes a date once the baby is here.

Silva Studios Photography holds newborn dates as a two-week window around your due date rather than a single fixed day. A newborn session is $450 for one hour and 15 professionally edited, high-resolution images, photographed in your own home or in the studio with lighting.

How far ahead should you book a newborn photographer?

Twenty-eight weeks is the number I give families, and the second trimester is not too early.

Twenty-eight weeks sits about nine weeks ahead of 37 weeks, the earliest a baby is considered term, and that gap is the whole point. Anything reserved after 36 weeks is a race against a due date nobody can see, and the families who write to me at 39 weeks are choosing from whatever is left.

There is also simple arithmetic behind the number. Clark County registered 24,210 births in 2025, according to the Southern Nevada Health District's surveillance dashboard, which works out to roughly 66 babies a day across the valley. The newborn window is only ten days wide per family, and every one of those families is competing for the same ten days.

Why can't you book a newborn session for a specific date?

A newborn session cannot be pinned to a specific date because a healthy, normal birth can land anywhere across a five-week span.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists defines early term as 37 0/7 through 38 6/7 weeks, full term as 39 0/7 through 40 6/7 weeks, late term as 41 0/7 through 41 6/7 weeks, and postterm as 42 0/7 weeks and beyond. The span from 37 0/7 to 42 0/7 weeks is 35 days of entirely normal outcomes. ACOG also puts the average length of pregnancy at 280 days, or 40 weeks, counted from the first day of your last menstrual period — an average, not a promise.

The due date itself is firmer than most people assume. A first-trimester ultrasound dates a pregnancy to within about five to seven days, and ACOG is explicit that once a due date has been set it does not change no matter how many later ultrasounds you have. A due date is a reliable anchor for a window, and not a reliable anchor for an appointment.

What happens if your baby arrives early in Las Vegas?

Early arrivals are more common in Las Vegas than in most of the country, which is the strongest local argument for booking sooner.

The March of Dimes 2025 Report Card puts the preterm birth rate at 11.4% in Clark County and 11.6% in the city of Las Vegas, against a statewide Nevada rate of 11.0% and a Healthy People 2030 target of 9.4%. Roughly one Las Vegas baby in nine arrives before 37 weeks. A window reserved around a mid-February due date has to be able to slide into late January without anybody panicking, and that only works if it was reserved with room to move.

The flip side is just as real. ACOG notes that labor induction may be recommended once a pregnancy reaches 41 weeks, so a window can slide the other direction by a week or more.

What does the booking timeline look like week by week?

The booking timeline runs from a shortlist of photographers at 20 weeks to the session itself between days five and fourteen after the birth.

Point in pregnancy What to do then Why that week
20 to 24 weeks Shortlist photographers and ask how each one holds newborn dates A photographer who only offers fixed dates struggles with a real due date
28 weeks Reserve the newborn window Twenty-eight weeks is about nine weeks ahead of the earliest term arrival at 37 weeks
30 to 34 weeks Photograph the maternity session The bump is unmistakable and most people are still comfortable standing an hour
36 weeks Confirm the plan and swap phone numbers Late-preterm arrivals start here, so the plan has to be settled by now
Birth day Text the photographer from the hospital The window becomes a date within a few hours
Days 5 to 14 The newborn session happens Deep sleep and curled poses are still available in this range
Week 3 onward A milestone or lifestyle session instead Sleep gets lighter and curled poses stop looking comfortable

Day five is the earliest I will photograph a family, and that is a decision about the parents rather than the baby. How old should a baby be for newborn photos in Las Vegas? goes through the full age question, including what to do if the window has already passed.

Should you book the maternity session at the same time?

Booking both sessions in one conversation is what most families do, and the maternity session belongs between 30 and 34 weeks.

A maternity session at Silva Studios Photography is $350 for one hour outdoors at a location you choose, with 15 professionally edited, high-resolution images. Booking the two together leaves the maternity session scheduled before the third trimester gets uncomfortable. How many weeks pregnant should you be for maternity photos? covers the timing in detail.

Does the Las Vegas calendar change when you should book?

Babies due between October and December need the earliest booking of the year, because fall and holiday family sessions are filling those same weeks.

Winter light is the other Las Vegas factor. The earliest sunset of 2026 in Las Vegas falls on December 5 at 4:25 pm, and the December 21 solstice gives the valley 9 hours and 42 minutes of daylight. Newborn sessions run on daylight through a window rather than on a sunset time, so a December session means a late-morning or early-afternoon start and a shorter usable stretch of light.

Summer runs the opposite way. The normal July high in Las Vegas is 104.5°F in the National Weather Service 1991–2020 normals, which is why a June or July baby is photographed at home rather than driven anywhere. Silva Studios Photography photographs newborn sessions in your own home across Las Vegas, Summerlin, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Enterprise and Paradise, so the season changes the light in the room and nothing else.

What should you ask before you reserve a newborn date?

Ask four questions, and ask them before you pay anything.

  • Ask whether the photographer holds a window around the due date or a single fixed date.
  • Ask what happens if the baby arrives three weeks early, and what happens if the pregnancy goes to 41 weeks.
  • Ask whether the session is photographed at home or in a studio, and who supplies the lighting.
  • Ask exactly what is included: the length of the session, the number of edited images, and the total price.

Silva Studios Photography answers all four in writing before a date is held, and the studio takes calls and messages seven days a week from 9am to 7pm at (702) 473-0832. If you are reading this in the second trimester, the useful thing to do today is send a message with your due date and the neighborhood you live in. Nothing else about the session has to be decided yet.

The second of those four questions has its own answer here: What happens to newborn photos if your baby arrives early or late in Las Vegas? walks through where the five-to-fourteen-day window lands for an early, on-time or late arrival.

One last practical note: how do you prepare your house for a newborn photo session in Las Vegas? is worth reading at about 36 weeks, not at day four. Almost nothing has to be done, and knowing that in advance is the part that helps.
