Maternity
How many weeks pregnant should you be for maternity photos?
· Updated · 8 min read · by Melyssa Silva

You should be between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant for maternity photos. That is the start of the third trimester, when the bump is round and clearly defined but you are still comfortable enough to walk a short path, sit on a blanket and stand for an hour without it becoming work.
Almost everyone arrives at this question the same way. Somewhere around the middle of pregnancy it occurs to you that you might want photographs of this, followed immediately by the worry that it is either far too early to be thinking about it or somehow already too late. It is neither, and there is a right week inside that window for you specifically.
Silva Studios Photography books maternity sessions around the week that suits your pregnancy rather than the week that suits the calendar, which matters more than it sounds when the ideal window is about six weeks wide.
Why is 28 to 34 weeks the best window for maternity photos?
Because it is the only stretch of pregnancy where the bump photographs the way you picture it and you still feel like yourself. Those two things do not overlap for very long, which is why the window is as narrow as it is.
Before 28 weeks the shape is usually softer than it looks in the mirror. You can see it clearly from the side, standing in your own bathroom, but a camera flattens depth and it often reads smaller than it feels. After 34 weeks the opposite problem starts: the bump is magnificent, and swelling, back ache and real tiredness tend to show up together.
In between, you get both. A defined, unmistakable silhouette, and the energy to enjoy the hour it takes to photograph it.
Which week should you choose inside that window?
The right week inside that window depends on how your pregnancy is going and what you want the session to include.
| Week | What it usually looks and feels like | Worth booking? |
|---|---|---|
| 20–24 | Visible in person, often reads smaller on camera | Early. Lovely as a casual extra session, not as your only one |
| 25–27 | Shape rounding out, energy generally still good | Workable if your schedule leaves no other option |
| 28–31 | Clearly defined bump, comfortable movement | Ideal, and the right choice if you want hair and makeup |
| 32–34 | Fullest, roundest shape, still very manageable | Ideal. These are the most requested weeks of all |
| 35–36 | Beautiful, but swelling and fatigue are common | Possible, with a shorter and gentler session |
| 37+ | Full term. Baby could arrive any day | Book in-home, keep it simple, be ready to move the date |
If nothing about your pregnancy is unusual, aim for 30 to 32 weeks and you will land comfortably in the middle of the good window with room on either side.
Should you book earlier if you are having twins?
Yes. With twins or multiples, plan for 26 to 30 weeks instead. A twin pregnancy usually shows earlier and more dramatically, so the bump reaches a photogenic shape sooner, and multiples more often arrive before the due date. Moving the whole window forward by a few weeks protects you on both counts.
The same logic applies to anyone who has been advised to limit activity, or who is having a harder pregnancy than they expected. Earlier is almost always the safer call. It is much easier to look at photographs taken a little sooner than you planned than to have none at all because the date came and went.
Does it change if this is not your first baby?
Somewhat. Second and third pregnancies often show earlier, which means you may hit that defined, rounded shape closer to 26 or 28 weeks than 32. If you have been pregnant before, trust what you are seeing rather than the calendar. A quick photo on your phone, taken from the side in fitted clothing, tells you more than any general guideline can.
There is a second consideration, and it is a scheduling one. If older children are joining, book while you still have the energy to move at their pace. The same approach that keeps a toddler happy through a family session applies here: short prompts, quick movement, breaks whenever they are needed.
Does living in Las Vegas change when you should book?
Living in Las Vegas changes the time of day far more than it changes the week, but it does change both.
Between June and September, the only comfortable outdoor hours in the valley are the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. That is true in any week of pregnancy, and it is especially true in the third trimester, when the heat is harder to tolerate than it has ever been. If your window falls in high summer, you have two good options: an early morning session in the desert, or an in-home session where the temperature is entirely yours to set.
Spring and fall are the easiest seasons in Las Vegas for maternity photography, and they are also the busiest. If your 28-to-34 week window lands in March, April, October or November, book several weeks ahead. Those dates fill first.
| Your window falls in | Best approach |
|---|---|
| March to May | Outdoor, golden hour. Book early, these dates go fast |
| June to September | Sunrise or the last hour of light, or move indoors |
| October to November | Outdoor, golden hour. The most requested season of the year |
| December to February | Midday is genuinely pleasant. Warmer light, quieter calendar |
Where you go matters less than when. Red Rock Canyon and the dry lake bed give you open desert and warm light. Floyd Lamb Park and Springs Preserve give you trees, lawns and water. Your own home gives you calm, and requires nothing of you but being there.
What if you are already past 34 weeks?
Book anyway, and book soon.
A session at 35 or 36 weeks is still very much worth having. It looks a little different in practice: shorter, closer to home or entirely at home, more sitting, fewer locations. The photographs are no less beautiful for it. Some of the tenderest maternity images come from the last few weeks, when there is a stillness to the waiting that is not there at 30 weeks.
Past 37 weeks it becomes a scheduling question rather than a photography one. An in-home session can be arranged quickly, and the plan should allow for the baby having other ideas.
What does a maternity session actually involve?
| Session length | 1 hour |
| Location | An outdoor setting of your choice, or your home |
| Images | 15 professionally edited, high-resolution photographs |
| Delivery | A private online gallery, within 1 to 2 weeks |
| Price | $350 |
| Partner and children | Welcome, at no extra charge |
You are guided the whole way through. This is the part people worry about most and it is the part that matters least, because nobody arrives knowing how to stand. Melyssa worked as a fashion model before she was ever behind the camera, so she understands light, angles and posing from the other side of the lens, and she will put you into positions that feel natural and photograph beautifully. The real moments happen in the gaps between them.
If you want the longer version of all of this, including what to wear and how each location behaves at golden hour, the full Las Vegas maternity photography guide covers it.
When should you actually get in touch?
Earlier than the session itself, is the short answer. Reaching out somewhere in the second trimester, around 20 to 24 weeks, gives you a genuine choice of dates instead of whatever is left.
You do not need to have decided anything else first. Not the location, not the outfit, not whether your partner is coming. All of that gets sorted out afterward. The only thing worth doing now is putting a date on the calendar while your window is still ahead of you.
Once you know your week, the calendar month that week lands in decides the weather, the light and the park hours you get — What is the best month for maternity photos in Las Vegas? works through all twelve.
