Is it too late for maternity photos at 36 weeks?

Silva Studios Photography journal cover reading "Is it too late for maternity photos at 36 weeks?"

Thirty-six weeks is not too late for maternity photos, and in Las Vegas it is still a good week to shoot. A 36-week session works best kept short, kept flat, and booked within the next few days rather than the next few weeks, because about one in ten babies in the United States arrives before 37 weeks.

Nobody searches this question casually. Someone typing it at 36 weeks has usually just worked out that the window they meant to book is behind them, and wants to know whether the chance is gone. The chance is not gone. What changes at 36 weeks is the shape of the session, not whether the session is worth having.

Silva Studios Photography books maternity sessions as one-hour sittings at an outdoor location of your choice — short enough for a 36-week body to do comfortably, and flexible enough that the location can be picked for level ground rather than for the view.

Is 36 weeks too late for maternity photos?

Thirty-six weeks is not too late, and it is not unusual either. The bump is at its fullest and roundest around 36 weeks, which is the shape most people picture when they imagine maternity photographs in the first place.

The reputation for being late has nothing to do with how the photographs look. The concern is logistical: the closer a session sits to the due date, the better the chance labor arrives first. A scheduling risk is managed by booking sooner, not by abandoning the session.

What does 36 weeks mean medically?

At 36 weeks a pregnancy has not yet reached early term, which the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists defines as 37 weeks 0 days through 38 weeks 6 days. ACOG and the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine set that definition in a November 2013 committee opinion, published by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Category Gestational age Distance from 36 weeks
Preterm Before 37 weeks 0 days 36 weeks sits here, with days of margin
Early term 37 weeks 0 days – 38 weeks 6 days One to three weeks away
Full term 39 weeks 0 days – 40 weeks 6 days Three to five weeks away

The birth statistics are the part worth acting on. The National Center for Health Statistics recorded a United States preterm birth rate of 10.41 percent in 2023, so roughly one baby in ten arrived before 37 weeks at all. Among singleton births that year, 29.64 percent were early term at 37 or 38 weeks. A session postponed to "next month" at 36 weeks is a session with a real chance of never happening.

What changes about a maternity session at 36 weeks?

A 36-week session gets shorter, flatter and closer to home than a 30-week session, and the posing shifts toward sitting and leaning rather than standing and walking. The rest of the hour is unchanged.

The Cleveland Clinic lists swelling in the ankles and feet, fatigue, shortness of breath and Braxton Hicks contractions among the ordinary features of late pregnancy. All four are worth planning around rather than pushing through: swollen feet decide the shoes, shortness of breath decides how far anyone walks from the car, and fatigue decides that the session runs one hour and not two.

In practice a 36-week session means one location instead of two, a spot within a few minutes of parking, a chair or blanket available throughout, and no hiking of any kind. The Cleveland Clinic notes that walking is generally comfortable in the third trimester while activities carrying a high risk of falling are not, which is the line a desert location has to stay on the right side of.

Where should you take maternity photos at 36 weeks in Las Vegas?

Floyd Lamb Park is the best Las Vegas location for a 36-week maternity session, because Floyd Lamb offers grass, shade and level paths about twenty minutes north of the city. Terrain matters more than scenery at 36 weeks.

Location Terrain at 36 weeks Drive
Floyd Lamb Park Grass, shade and level paths. Best in spring and fall About 20 minutes north
The dry lake bed Completely flat and hard-packed, but no shade at all About 30 minutes northeast
Springs Preserve Paved, level and fully stroller-accessible About 10 minutes from downtown
Your own home One room near one window is the entire set None

Floyd Lamb Park is at its best in spring and fall, and late October sits squarely in that window. An in-home session is the other strong answer at 36 weeks, and the one to choose if getting dressed and driving anywhere sounds like more than this week has in it.

What time does a 36-week session start in Las Vegas right now?

A maternity session in Las Vegas on October 21 should begin at 5:21 PM, when evening golden hour opens, with sunset at 5:56 PM. That timing is about to change sharply, which is the most useful thing to know if you are booking this week.

Daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026. Sunset in Las Vegas drops from 5:45 PM on October 31 to 4:44 PM on November 1 — an hour and a minute, overnight. By November 15 the sun sets at 4:32 PM and golden hour opens at 3:54 PM, which for most families means leaving work early rather than driving out after it.

Red Rock Canyon tightens on the same schedule. The Bureau of Land Management opens the Scenic Drive at 6:00 a.m. daily and closes it at 7 p.m. in October, then at 5 p.m. from November through February, and a timed-entry reservation is required from October 1 through May 31 for entry between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. A Red Rock session in mid-November has to fit a 3:54 PM golden hour inside a gate that shuts at five.

The weather is doing the opposite favor. National Weather Service normals put the October average high in Las Vegas at 80.6°F against November's 66.3°F, and normal 90-degree days fall from 22.2 in September to 4.1 in October. For a 36-week pregnancy, late October is the most comfortable outdoor shooting weather the valley offers all year.

What happens if the baby arrives before the session?

Then the session becomes a newborn session instead.

Booking at 36 weeks means accepting that the date might not hold, so the move is to take the earliest available date rather than the prettiest one, and to keep a backup that needs no park at all. An in-home session can be arranged on short notice and asks for nothing but one room and one window.
