Do you need hair and makeup for maternity photos in Las Vegas?
· 8 min read · by Melyssa Silva

You do not need professional hair and makeup for maternity photos in Las Vegas, and a Silva Studios maternity session does not include it. What the desert changes is not whether you hire an artist but what any makeup has to survive: afternoon relative humidity in Las Vegas averages 17 percent in September and 19 percent in October, which is drier than almost anywhere else people get photographed.
Nearly every expecting mother asks me this, usually late at night a week before the session. Professional hair and makeup changes how you feel more than it changes the photographs, and how you feel is not a small thing at 32 weeks.
Silva Studios Photography photographs maternity sessions as one hour outdoors at a location you choose, $350 for fifteen professionally edited, high-resolution images. Hair and makeup are yours to arrange, and the booking page recommends booking at 28 to 31 weeks rather than later if you want an artist, because that leaves room to schedule one.
Is hair and makeup included in a Las Vegas maternity session?
Hair and makeup are not included in a Silva Studios maternity session. The $350 covers one hour of photography at an outdoor location of your choice and fifteen professionally edited, high-resolution images delivered in an online gallery within one to two weeks.
Knowing that matters when you compare quotes. A studio package with an artist folded in is not necessarily more expensive than an outdoor session once you price the two pieces separately.
One thing does come with the session. Natalee's review on the site mentions that Melyssa brought flowers and hair accessories to her maternity session. Small props are part of the hour; a makeup artist is not.
How dry is Las Vegas air, and what does that do to makeup?
Las Vegas afternoon air averages 17 percent relative humidity in September and 19 percent in October, and the National Weather Service calls the valley the driest major metropolitan area in the continental United States.
The NOAA technical memorandum on the climate of Las Vegas records average relative humidity at four points in the day across the year. The 4 p.m. column is the one that matters for a sunset session:
| Month | Average relative humidity at 4 p.m. in Las Vegas |
|---|---|
| January | 31 percent |
| April | 16 percent |
| June | 11 percent |
| September | 17 percent |
| October | 19 percent |
| Full year | 21 percent |
Average annual precipitation in Las Vegas is 4.18 inches across the 1991 to 2020 normals at Harry Reid International Airport. Dry air is the default here, not a heat wave event.
Two practical things follow. Powder-heavy makeup reads chalkier on dry skin than it does in a humid climate, so a cream or liquid base generally photographs softer here. Lip color goes patchy faster too, which is why the balm and the touch-up stick belong in the bag, not the car.
Heat is the other half. The September average high in Las Vegas is 94.9 degrees and the October average high is 81.2 degrees, both from the 1991 to 2020 normals. A September session is a warm-weather session whatever the calendar says, which is worth telling your artist before they pick a foundation.
What time should you book hair and makeup for a sunset maternity session?
Work backward from sunset, not forward from your day. A one-hour session that ends at sunset starts an hour before it, and if you allow thirty minutes to drive and park and ninety minutes in the chair, the salon appointment lands three hours before sunset.
Sunset times below come from timeanddate.com for Las Vegas. The last two columns are the arithmetic, using those two assumptions:
| Session date | Sunset in Las Vegas | Session starts | Hair and makeup should start |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 22, 2026 | 6:37 pm | 5:37 pm | 3:37 pm |
| October 1, 2026 | 6:23 pm | 5:23 pm | 3:23 pm |
| October 15, 2026 | 6:04 pm | 5:04 pm | 3:04 pm |
| October 31, 2026 | 5:45 pm | 4:45 pm | 2:45 pm |
Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2:00 am, and sunset in Las Vegas drops by an hour overnight. A November session that would have been a late-afternoon appointment becomes a midday one, which catches people out every single year.
Light does not stop at sunset. Civil twilight on September 22, 2026 runs until 7:02 pm in Las Vegas, another twenty-five minutes of soft light after the sun goes. For the full year of timing, what time of day is best for photos in Las Vegas? works it out month by month.
Does pregnancy change what you should put on your skin first?
Pregnancy does change what belongs on your skin before a session. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises avoiding topical retinoids and hydroquinone during pregnancy, and both turn up in ordinary over-the-counter brightening and anti-aging products people reach for before a photo session.
Melasma is the reason many people want coverage in the first place. Published prevalence of melasma in pregnancy ranges from 36.4 percent to 75 percent depending on the population studied, and the American Academy of Dermatology estimates about 6 million women in the United States have it. The Academy also lists sun exposure as something that aggravates the pigmentation, which is a real argument for the last hour of light over a midday session in this valley.
For anything active, the American Academy of Dermatology names azelaic acid and benzoyl peroxide among the options generally considered safe in pregnancy. None of this is medical advice from a photographer, and your ob-gyn is the person to ask about your own skin.
A new product the week before a session is also a gamble. Whatever you already use is the safer thing to be wearing.
Should you wear sunscreen under makeup for a desert maternity session?
Wear sunscreen, and pick the chemical kind if there is any chance of flash. In its 2019 proposed rule the Food and Drug Administration reviewed sixteen sunscreen active ingredients and proposed only two — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, at concentrations up to 25 percent — as generally recognized as safe and effective.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are opaque white minerals that work by scattering light rather than absorbing it, which is exactly why a heavy mineral sunscreen can leave a pale cast in a flash-lit frame. Outdoors at golden hour it rarely matters. In a room with a light on a stand it can.
Sun protection matters more than the cast does. Red Rock Canyon is about twenty-five minutes west of the Strip with very little shade on the desert floor, and the Red Rock Canyon location page describes the terrain and light there.
How do you check a makeup artist's credentials in Nevada?
Ask where the artist works, because Nevada regulates salon-based and mobile makeup artists differently. Under NRS 644A.395, a makeup artist practicing inside a licensed cosmetological establishment must hold a certificate of registration from the Nevada State Board of Cosmetology; the registration fee is capped at $25 and the certificate is valid for one year.
A mobile artist who comes to your house is under a different subsection of the same statute. NRS 644A.395 requires that artist to be at least 18, of good moral character, and to have completed at least two years of high school, but does not require Board registration. Nevada law also puts makeup artistry outside the definition of cosmetology entirely, under NRS 644A.040.
Nevada does define the work specifically. NRS 644A.110 defines makeup artistry as applying makeup, strip eyelashes or prosthetics for theatrical and film production, for the modeling and fashion industry including photography, and for weddings.
None of that tells you whether someone is good. The statute tells you what a Las Vegas artist is and is not required to hold, so you can ask for a portfolio instead of assuming a license settles it.
Is professional hair and makeup worth it for maternity photos?
Professional hair and makeup is worth it if you want to stop thinking about your face for the hour, and skippable if you already know how you like to look. Here is the honest comparison:
| Doing your own | Booking an artist | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Nothing beyond what you own | A separate booking, priced by the artist |
| Timing | Flexible up to the session | Fixed three hours before sunset |
| Desert dryness | You know what your own skin does at 17 percent humidity | An artist chooses products for the conditions you describe |
| How it photographs | Reads as you, which is what you will want in ten years | Reads more polished, more even in close frames |
| What it changes most | Almost nothing in the frames | How you feel walking into the hour |
I have photographed maternity sessions both ways and the results do not split cleanly. What I notice is that the mothers who booked an artist spent the hour looking at their partner instead of at the back of my camera, and that shows.
Silva Studios Photography books maternity sessions seven days a week, 9am to 7pm, at (702) 473-0832, and the start time is set against that date's sunset rather than dropped into a fixed slot — which is what lets you plan a salon appointment around it at all. Outfits are the other decision that gets made early, and what should you wear for maternity photos in the desert? is written about exactly that.
