October is the best month for maternity photos in Las Vegas. Las Vegas averages a normal high of 81.2°F in October, sunset falls between 6:23 pm and 5:45 pm across the month, and the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive stays open until 7 pm through October. No other month in this valley puts a comfortable afternoon, a late golden hour and open desert access into the same four weeks.

Almost nobody asking this question is free to pick a month, though. Your due date picks it for you, and the calendar only gets a vote inside a window about six weeks wide. So the useful answer is not the word "October" on its own — it is what each month in Las Vegas gives you, so you can choose well inside whatever window your pregnancy leaves.

Silva Studios Photography photographs maternity sessions as one hour outdoors at a location you choose, $350 for 15 professionally edited images, with the start time set against that date's sunset rather than a fixed indoor slot.

Why is October the best month for maternity photos in Las Vegas?

October is the only month where Las Vegas is comfortable outdoors and the good light still arrives before dinnertime.

The National Weather Service's 1991–2020 normals for Las Vegas put October's average high at 81.2°F and its average low at 59.6°F. September's normal high is 94.9°F and November's is 67.1°F, so October sits in a narrow gap between a month that is still summer and one that is already winter.

The light does the rest. Sunset in Las Vegas on October 1, 2026 is 6:23 pm and on October 31 it is 5:45 pm, which keeps the hour before sunset starting after 4:45 pm all month. Then it stops: daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2:00 am, and sunset lands at 4:44 pm that same evening.

October is also calm by local standards. Averaged over 1991 to 2020, the National Weather Service wind record for Las Vegas puts October at 7.1 mph and April at 10.0 mph. Wind is the thing most likely to ruin a maternity photograph, because a dress that will not sit still is one you fight for an hour.

What does each month actually give you in Las Vegas?

Every month is workable for maternity photos in Las Vegas, but each one costs you something different.

Month Normal high Red Rock Scenic Drive closes What that month means for a maternity session
January 58.5°F 5 pm January is cold enough that a bare-shoulder gown needs a coat between frames
February 62.9°F 5 pm February is mild, but the Scenic Drive closes before the best light
March 71.1°F 7 pm March is the best spring month for maternity photos, with the gate open to 7 pm
April 78.5°F 8 pm April is the windiest month in Las Vegas at 10.0 mph, which fabric feels first
May 88.5°F 8 pm May works for maternity photos tight against sunset, not late afternoon
June 99.4°F 8 pm June pushes outdoor maternity sessions to sunrise or the last half hour
July 104.5°F 8 pm July is the hottest month in Las Vegas and the hardest for a third-trimester session
August 102.8°F 8 pm August carries both heat and monsoon storms, so in-home sessions make more sense
September 94.9°F 8 pm September is still summer by temperature, with sunset near 6:49 pm mid-month
October 81.2°F 7 pm October is the best month for maternity photos in Las Vegas on every measure
November 67.1°F 5 pm November is beautiful and cool, but sunset falls to 4:26 pm by the thirtieth
December 56.9°F 5 pm December is the coldest month in Las Vegas, at a normal high of 56.9°F

Normal highs are the National Weather Service 1991–2020 figures for Las Vegas. Scenic Drive closing times are the Bureau of Land Management hours published on recreation.gov.

How do you work backward from your due date to a month?

Subtract about six to twelve weeks from your due date and you have your two candidate months.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists places the start of the third trimester at 28 weeks and 0 days and full term at 39 0/7 through 40 6/7 weeks. The 28-to-34-week window most maternity sessions are booked in therefore sits a month and a half to three months ahead of your due date. How many weeks pregnant should you be for maternity photos? walks through choosing the exact week.

  • A December due date puts your session in October or early November
  • A February due date puts your session in December or early January
  • A May due date puts your session in March or early April
  • A September due date puts your session in July or early August

Which months are hardest for maternity photos in Las Vegas?

July and August are the hardest months for maternity photos in Las Vegas.

July's normal high is 104.5°F and August's is 102.8°F, and the National Weather Service monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30, adding an average of 4.5 thunderstorm days in July and 3.8 in August. Summer sessions do not have to be canceled, though — they move indoors or to the edges of the day. An in-home session needs one room near one window and no drive across the valley, which is why summer maternity bookings tend to land there.

December and January are hard for the opposite reason. Normal highs of 56.9°F and 58.5°F are manageable in a coat, but the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive closes at 5 pm from November through February and sunset in late November is already 4:26 pm.

Does the month change where you can shoot at Red Rock Canyon?

Yes — the reservation rule at Red Rock Canyon flips on October 1 every year.

The Bureau of Land Management requires a timed-entry reservation for any vehicle entering the Scenic Drive between 8 am and 5 pm from October 1 through May 31, and none from June 1 through September 30. Reservations release on recreation.gov 30 days ahead at 7 a.m. Pacific, with a second batch two days out.

The practical effect on a fall or winter maternity session is a fixed one-hour entry slot rather than a flexible arrival. The Scenic Drive is 13 miles, one way, starting 17 miles west of the Strip, so entry time and sunset time get planned together at booking. Where can you take maternity photos at Red Rock Canyon? covers the pullouts that work in a third trimester, and the Red Rock Canyon location page has the terrain and light notes.

Silva Studios Photography is open Monday through Sunday, 9 am to 7 pm, which covers the last hour of daylight in every month on the table above — including December, when that hour is finished before 5 pm. Dates and start times are confirmed on the contact page.

What if your best month is already behind you?

A month you have already passed is not a reason to skip maternity photos.

The window that matters is the one your pregnancy is in, not the one the weather would prefer, and a July session shot at home beats an October session you never had. Wardrobe does the most work across seasons, and what should you wear for maternity photos in the desert? is written around that problem.

The short version

  • October is the best month for maternity photos in Las Vegas, at a normal high of 81.2°F with sunset between 6:23 pm and 5:45 pm
  • March is the best spring alternative, at 71.1°F with the Red Rock Scenic Drive open until 7 pm
  • July and August are the hardest months outdoors, at 104.5°F and 102.8°F with monsoon storms from June 15 through September 30
  • Your due date, not the calendar, sets the real window — subtract six to twelve weeks and pick the better of the two months you land on
