How old should a baby be for newborn photos in Las Vegas?

Five to fourteen days old is the window, and day six through day ten is where I do most of my best work. Babies that age still sleep deeply, still curl the way they did on the inside, and have not yet found their own hands. The part almost nobody tells you: you reserve that window while you are still pregnant, because a newborn session is booked around a due date rather than a calendar date.

I get this question more than any other, usually in a text sent at two in the morning from a hospital room. Here is the honest version of the answer, including what happens when the window is already gone.

Why is five to fourteen days the window?

Three things line up in that stretch and then quietly stop lining up.

The first is sleep. A baby under two weeks sleeps through most of an hour, and deep sleep is what makes the quiet, curled, wrapped photographs people picture when they say "newborn photos." Past about three weeks that sleep gets lighter and shorter, and the session turns into something else.

The second is flexibility. A brand-new baby still folds. Knees come up, hands come to the chin, the spine keeps the round shape it held for nine months. That softness fades a little more every day, and by week four the same pose has to be built instead of simply supported.

The third is you. Day five is roughly the earliest that most families are ready to have anyone in the house. Feeding is starting to find a rhythm, the initial wave of visitors has passed, and if you had a cesarean you are not being asked to get in a car. That is why I do not shoot day two or day three even when a parent asks. The photographs are better when the mother in them is not four days out and running on nothing.

What if my baby is already three weeks old?

Then we do a different session, and it is not a consolation prize.

Somewhere between three and six weeks babies start to be awake for real stretches, and the pictures change character. Less curled and wrapped, more eye contact, more of the two of you looking at each other. Skin has usually settled by then too, which the dry air here tends to draw out longer than parents expect. Week two in Las Vegas often means peeling hands and feet; by week five that is done.

The only thing I would steer you away from is trying to force the tightly curled, sleeping look at eight weeks. It photographs as a slightly uncomfortable older baby, and you can feel it in the frame.

When should I book a newborn photographer in Las Vegas?

During your second or third trimester, and earlier than feels necessary.

A newborn session is the one booking that cannot be moved to suit me. If you call me at day four, I am fitting you into whatever is left in the next ten days, and some weeks that is nothing. When you reserve during pregnancy, I hold the two weeks around your due date instead of a single date, and we set the actual day once the baby is here. That is the whole trick, and it costs you nothing to do it early.

Most people book their newborn session at the same time as their maternity one, usually around the 28 to 34 week mark when they are already thinking about photographs. If you are doing both, that timing is convenient rather than required.

Does the Las Vegas calendar change any of this?

More than you would think, because the window is fixed and the weather is not.

If your due date lands between May and September, plan on an in-home session and stop worrying about it. Nobody should be loading a nine-day-old into a car seat that has been sitting in a July parking lot, and there is no outdoor light in this valley at that time of year that is worth the trip. A session in your own home solves it completely: your room, your window, your thermostat, and no drive at all.

October through April is different. The temperature cooperates, and if you want a few outdoor frames with an older sibling before or after the indoor part, the valley is generous about it. Floyd Lamb Park is about twenty minutes north and has real grass and shade. Red Rock Canyon is about twenty-five minutes west of the Strip, though I would save that one for a family session at six weeks rather than a nine-day-old, since it sits on a timed-entry system and a newborn does not do well on a schedule set by a gate.

The other thing the calendar does here is fill up. Late fall is the busiest stretch of the year for every photographer in this city, so a December due date needs a September conversation.

What actually happens if the baby comes early or late?

We move, and it is not a problem.

This is why I hold a window rather than a date. Babies arrive when they arrive, first babies especially, and a due date is a midpoint rather than a deadline. When you go into labor, you text me. I have the following two weeks blocked, and we pick the day once you are home and you know what your feeding schedule looks like.

If your baby spends time in the NICU, that changes the timeline and that is fine too. We wait until you are home and settled, and then we do the session that fits the age your baby actually is, using the table above. I would rather make honest photographs of a five-week-old than pretend a five-week-old is nine days old.

What does the session itself involve?

A newborn session runs one hour, in your home or in the studio with lighting, and you receive fifteen professionally edited high-resolution images. It is $450.

An hour sounds short until you are in it. Most of that hour is not photography — it is feeding, changing, resettling, feeding again.
