What is a fall mini session in Las Vegas?

A fall mini session is a 25-minute version of a family session: $200, 10 professionally edited digital images, one outdoor location, delivered in one to two weeks. My 2026 dates are two October weekends, October 2–4 and October 9–11. The short format is not a discount gimmick — it exists because an October evening in Las Vegas only gives us about one hour of light worth photographing in, and 25 minutes is what fits inside it repeatedly.

People usually find the words "mini session" before they find out what they mean, and the meaning genuinely varies photographer to photographer. So here is exactly what mine is, what it is not, and how to tell which one you actually want.

What do you get for $200?

Twenty-five minutes with me at one outdoor fall location, and 10 professionally edited, high-resolution digital images delivered in one to two weeks. That is the whole offer, and there is nothing else attached to it.

What that buys in practice is one setup. We pick the light, we work one stretch of ground, and you get a tight, consistent set from a single scene — the kind of gallery that gives you a holiday card, a framed print, and a phone background. What it does not buy is variety of place. There is no second location, no golden-hour-and-then-blue-hour, and no long warm-up while a three-year-old decides whether to participate.

A mini session is also open to more than families. Couples, a pregnant belly, one parent and one baby, someone and their dog — the format does not care, because the constraint is time, not subject.

How is a mini session different from a full family session?

The difference is not quality. It is the same camera, the same editing, and the same light I would chase for any other session. What changes is how much room there is to breathe.

The honest read on that table: $500 is not two-and-a-half times $200 worth of photographs, it is two-and-a-half times the amount of session. If your children are past the unpredictable stage and you know what you want, the mini is efficient. If you are bringing four people who have never done this, two hours is what makes it calm, and you can see how a full family session is built instead.

Why do Las Vegas mini sessions only run on two October weekends?

Because October is the only month here where comfortable air and usable light overlap.

September still averages a high near 94°F in this valley, and the ground keeps radiating heat well past sunset — workable for a session planned tightly, but not what anyone pictures when they say fall photos. October averages around 74°F. Sunset runs from about 6:23 pm on October 1 down to 5:45 pm on the 31st, so the good light lands in the late afternoon, after school and before dinner, with nobody overheated.

Then daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1 and sunset drops to roughly 4:44 pm, which puts golden hour in the middle of the school pickup line. That is the whole reason the mini weekends sit where they do. On my October dates the sun is going down around 6:20 pm on the first weekend and about 6:10 pm on the second, and the hour before that is what we are working with.

That hour is also why sessions are 25 minutes rather than an hour. Divide one hour of genuinely good light by families who all want to be in it, and short slots are the only arrangement where nobody gets the leftovers. Everybody photographs inside the same light.

Who should book a mini, and who should not?

A mini session works well if:

• You want holiday card photographs and do not need a full gallery.
• Your group is small — a couple, a couple plus one or two children, a pregnant belly, one parent and a baby.
• You have done this with me before and we already know what your family does in front of a camera.
• Your children are school-age or older and can be reasonably relied on for 25 minutes.

Book a full session instead if:

• You are photographing an extended family, or a group large enough to need posing time.
• Your youngest is deep in the unpredictable stage, and the session needs the ability to stop for twenty minutes and restart.
• You want more than one setting, or a change of clothes.
• You want newborn photographs. Those are their own thing — a newborn session is an hour, indoors, warm, and paced to a five-day-old rather than to a sunset.

I would rather talk someone out of a mini than sell them 25 minutes that were never going to be enough. If you are not sure which it is, tell me who is coming and how old they are and I will tell you straight.

Where do the mini sessions happen in Las Vegas?

At one outdoor fall location for the weekend, and the choice is driven by what October does to the valley.

Floyd Lamb Park is the one that transforms in October. It is about twenty minutes north, with old trees, real grass and water, and it peaks in spring and fall — the lawns take a beating in high summer and the trees are bare in deep winter. That narrow October stretch is when it stops looking like the desert entirely, which is exactly what most people mean by fall photos in a city that does not really have a fall.

Red Rock Canyon is the other honest answer, about 25 minutes west of the Strip, where the sandstone holds warm color in the last hour of light better than anywhere else here. It runs on timed entry for much of the year, so a mini weekend there means planning the whole block around one entry window.
