Maternity
Should maternity photos be done in a studio or outdoors in Las Vegas?
· 8 min read · by Melyssa Silva

Outdoors, for most of the year in Las Vegas. Las Vegas averages 4.2 inches of precipitation a year and roughly 210 clear days, so the weatherproofing a studio buys you is worth less in this valley than almost anywhere else in the country. A studio earns its place in July and August, when the normal high is 104.5°F and 102.8°F, and for anyone who wants a private room rather than a public park.
That is the honest version of an answer most people expect to be a matter of taste. Studio and outdoor are not equal options that happen to look different. In Las Vegas one of them is fighting the climate and one of them is using it, and which is which flips twice a year.
Silva Studios Photography photographs maternity sessions as one hour outdoors at a location you choose, $350 for 15 professionally edited high-resolution images, with the start time set against that date's sunset rather than a fixed indoor slot.
Why does outdoors usually win for maternity photos in Las Vegas?
Outdoors usually wins because the main thing a studio protects you from — weather — barely happens here.
Las Vegas records a normal of 4.2 inches of precipitation across an entire year in the National Weather Service 1991–2020 normals, and the sky is mainly clear on about 210 days. In a city with 40 inches of annual rain, booking a studio is buying insurance against a real risk. In Las Vegas that same booking mostly buys a smaller room.
The second reason is light. The last hour before sunset in the open desert is a light source about as wide as the sky, and it wraps around a pregnant belly in a way no single strobe and softbox reproduces without work. Red Rock Canyon's sandstone also bounces warm light back up into faces from below, which is a free fill light that does not exist indoors.
The third reason is that the photographs end up looking like Las Vegas. A seamless gray backdrop looks the same in Henderson as it does in Ohio. Red sandstone, a dry lake bed and Floyd Lamb Park's old trees do not.
When is a studio the better choice for maternity photos in Las Vegas?
A studio is the better choice in July and August, and any time privacy matters more than landscape.
July's normal high in Las Vegas is 104.5°F and August's is 102.8°F. The National Weather Service monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30, which adds the one genuine cancellation risk on the calendar — an average of 4.5 thunderstorm days in July and 3.8 in August. A third-trimester session in that stretch either starts at sunrise, sits in the last half hour of light, or moves indoors.
Privacy is the other real case. Red Rock Canyon, Floyd Lamb Park and Springs Preserve are public places with other people in them on a Saturday afternoon. Some people want a fitted gown photographed in a room with a door, and that is a reason, not a preference to be talked out of.
Mobility is the third. At 36 weeks, walking from a parking area over gravel to a pullout is a different proposition than it was at 28. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists places the start of the third trimester at 28 weeks and 0 days and full term at 39 0/7 through 40 6/7 weeks, and the back half of that window is when an indoor set starts to make sense on its own terms.
Studio, outdoors, or in-home — which one fits your session?
Three settings, three different trades, and the right one depends on the month and the week of pregnancy you are in.
| Studio | Outdoors | Your own home | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weather risk in Las Vegas | None | Low — 4.2 inches of precipitation a year, about 210 clear days | None |
| Best months | June through September, when normal highs run 94.9°F to 104.5°F | October through May, with October at a normal high of 81.2°F | Any month |
| Light source | Strobes and modifiers you control completely | The last hour before sunset, plus sandstone bounce at Red Rock | Your largest window |
| Start time | Any hour you book | Fixed to sunset — 6:23 pm on October 1, 2026, and 5:45 pm on October 31 | Whenever your window is brightest |
| Access requirements | None | A $20 Red Rock vehicle fee, a timed-entry reservation from October 1 through May 31, or a Springs Preserve ticket | None |
| Travel in a third trimester | One drive, one room | 25 minutes west to Red Rock, 20 minutes north to Floyd Lamb Park, 30 minutes northeast to the dry lake bed | None |
| What the photographs look like | The same anywhere in the country | Unmistakably Las Vegas | Your actual life |

What time does an outdoor maternity session actually start in Las Vegas?
An outdoor maternity session starts about an hour before sunset, which this month means a little before 5:45 pm.
Sunset in Las Vegas on September 16, 2026 is 6:46 pm. By October 1 it is 6:23 pm, by October 31 it is 5:45 pm, and the evening after daylight saving time ends on November 1 it falls to 4:44 pm. An outdoor session is a moving appointment, and that is the honest cost of shooting outdoors here — the studio alternative is a fixed slot you pick for your own convenience.
The upside of that moving appointment is specific to Red Rock Canyon. The Bureau of Land Management requires a timed-entry reservation for the Scenic Drive between 8 am and 5 pm from October 1 through May 31, and requires none after 5 pm. Golden hour in October starts after 5 pm, so a properly timed fall maternity session at Red Rock needs no reservation at all. What is the best month for maternity photos in Las Vegas? works through the full calendar month by month.
Do you need a permit or a reservation to shoot outdoors?
A reservation, sometimes — a permit, it depends on what you bring.
The Bureau of Land Management does not require a Special Recreation Permit for still photography on public land where the public is generally allowed, except when the shoot uses a model, a set or a prop that is not part of the site's natural or cultural resources. Maternity sessions routinely involve flowing gowns, a chair, or flowers, so the answer is not automatic. Do you need a permit for photos at Red Rock Canyon? covers where that line actually falls.
Red Rock Canyon charges $20 per vehicle, the Scenic Drive runs 13 miles one way starting 17 miles west of the Strip, and the gate is open 6 am to 7 pm from October 1 through May 31. Springs Preserve is a ticketed attraction with its own photography rules, which is why that one gets confirmed at booking rather than assumed. A studio, to be fair to it, has none of this paperwork.
What does each option cost, and what does Silva Studios actually offer?
Silva Studios Photography photographs maternity outdoors at $350 for a one-hour session and 15 professionally edited high-resolution images, and photographs newborns in-home or in studio with lighting at $450.
The split is deliberate rather than a gap in the service list. A newborn sleeps through a controlled, warm, lit room, and that is the setting that serves a five-day-old best. A maternity session is one adult who can walk to a location, in a valley that hands you a usable outdoor evening roughly 210 days a year. Silva Studios is open Monday through Sunday, 9 am to 7 pm, which covers the last hour of daylight in every month of the year, including December.
If a public location is not what you want, an in-home maternity session is the middle option — a private room, your own window light, no drive across the valley, and no park rules. Are in-home maternity photos worth it? makes the case for that one in full. Dates and start times are confirmed on the contact page.
The short version
- Outdoors is the default for maternity photos in Las Vegas, because the valley averages 4.2 inches of precipitation a year and about 210 clear days
- A studio is the better choice in July and August, at normal highs of 104.5°F and 102.8°F, and during the June 15 to September 30 monsoon season
- An outdoor session is scheduled against sunset, which falls from 6:46 pm on September 16, 2026 to 4:44 pm on November 1
- Red Rock Canyon needs no timed-entry reservation after 5 pm, which is exactly when a fall golden-hour session starts
- Your own home is the third option, and it costs nothing in weather, travel or park rules
