How long does a maternity photo session take in Las Vegas?

A maternity photo session in Las Vegas takes one hour in front of the camera, and about two and a half to three hours door to door once you add the drive, parking and changing. The hour is short on purpose: the warm, low light that makes desert maternity photographs work lasts roughly 35 minutes in this valley, so the session is built around that window rather than stretched across an afternoon.

The number most people want is the first one, and one hour is the honest answer to it. The number that actually changes your evening is the second one, and almost nobody tells you that before you book.

Silva Studios Photography photographs maternity sessions as one hour outdoors at a location you choose, $350 for 15 professionally edited images, with the start time set against that date's sunset rather than dropped into a fixed slot.

How much of a maternity session is actually spent shooting?

The full hour is spent shooting, because the drive, the parking and the first outfit change all happen outside it.

A Las Vegas maternity session is not an hour of standing around waiting for light. The start time is chosen so that the hour lands on the light, which means the camera is working from the first few minutes. What sits outside the hour is everything that gets you to the spot: the drive out, finding the pullout, the walk from the car, and getting into the first dress.

Hair and makeup sit outside the hour too, and outside the door-to-door total above. A salon appointment has to be finished before the drive begins, which moves the whole afternoon earlier; do you need hair and makeup for maternity photos in Las Vegas? works that timing back from sunset.

The split between the hour and the evening is why two people can both say "one hour" and mean completely different evenings. An in-home session and a Red Rock Canyon session are the same hour of photographs with about ninety minutes of difference around them.

How long is golden hour in Las Vegas, really?

Golden hour in Las Vegas lasts about 35 minutes, not sixty.

Photographers use "golden hour" loosely for the stretch when the sun sits low enough to go warm and soft, which is roughly the last six degrees of altitude before it sets. Run that through the NOAA solar calculator for Las Vegas and the window is far shorter than the name suggests. On October 15, 2026, the sun in Las Vegas drops below six degrees at 5:31 pm and sets at 6:06 pm — 35 minutes of the light people book these sessions for.

The window is not the same length all year. Las Vegas sits at 36 degrees north, and the sun's angle at sunset gets shallower in winter, which stretches the window slightly:

Date in Las Vegas Golden window opens Sunset Length of the warm window
October 15, 2026 5:31 pm 6:06 pm 35 minutes
October 31, 2026 5:10 pm 5:46 pm 36 minutes
November 15, 2026 3:56 pm 4:33 pm 37 minutes
December 21, 2026 3:49 pm 4:29 pm 40 minutes
June 21, 2026 7:23 pm 8:01 pm 38 minutes

Times are calculated with the NOAA solar calculator for Las Vegas, Nevada, in local time.

Light does not switch off at sunset, which is what buys back the rest of the hour. Civil twilight on October 15, 2026 runs until 6:32 pm in Las Vegas, so there are another 26 minutes of soft, shadowless light after the sun is gone. A one-hour session scheduled correctly spends roughly the first half in warm light and the second half in that afterglow, and those are two genuinely different sets of photographs from one booking.

How much time should you allow door to door?

Allow two and a half to three hours from leaving your house to getting home, depending on where you shoot.

The drive is the variable. Silva Studios Photography lists the drive time for every location it works, and the spread across the valley is wide:

Location Drive from central Las Vegas Realistic door-to-door total
Your own home None About 1 hour 15 minutes
Springs Preserve About 10 minutes from downtown About 2 hours
Floyd Lamb Park About 20 minutes north About 2 hours 15 minutes
Red Rock Canyon About 25 minutes west of the Strip About 3 hours
The dry lake bed About 30 minutes northeast About 3 hours

Drive times are Silva Studios Photography's own published figures for each location. Door-to-door totals add the round trip, parking, the walk in and changing to the one-hour session.

An in-home session is the shortest version of this by a wide margin, because the drive is zero on both ends and there is nowhere to change into. One room near one window is the whole set. In a third trimester that difference is not a small convenience.

Does Red Rock Canyon add time to a maternity session?

Red Rock Canyon adds the most time of any location in the valley, and from October 1 it also adds a fixed entry slot.

The Bureau of Land Management requires a timed-entry reservation for any vehicle entering the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive between 8 am and 5 pm from October 1 through May 31. Reservations release on recreation.gov 30 days in advance at 7 a.m. Pacific, and can also be made by phone at (877) 444-6777. The reservation covers entry only — once you are inside, you can stay until the gate closes.

Closing time is the part that catches people out in winter. The Scenic Drive is open 6 am to 7 pm in October, then 6 am to 5 pm from November through February. On November 15, 2026 the warm window in Las Vegas opens at 3:56 pm and sunset is 4:33 pm, so a golden-hour session inside Red Rock in November finishes with very little margin before the gate. The drive itself is 13 miles and takes about 40 minutes without stopping, which is time you are spending whether or not the camera is out.

Silva Studios Photography is open Monday through Sunday, 9 am to 7 pm, which covers the last hour of daylight in every month of the year, including December when that hour is over before 5 pm. The Red Rock Canyon location page has the terrain notes for a third trimester, and where can you take maternity photos at Red Rock Canyon? covers the specific pullouts that work.

How many outfits fit into one hour?

Two outfits fit comfortably into a one-hour maternity session, and three is pushing it.

Each change outdoors costs ten to fifteen minutes once you count walking back to the car and back out again. Two changes eat half the warm window, which is the whole reason the answer is two. Bring the gown you most want the photographs in and wear it first, while the light is at its best. What should you wear for maternity photos in the desert? goes through fabrics that survive desert wind, which matters more than the number of changes.

How does a maternity session compare to other sessions?

A maternity session is one hour, which is the same length as a newborn or couples session and half the length of a family session.

Session Length Images included Price
Maternity 1 hour 15 professionally edited images $350
Newborn 1 hour 15 professionally edited images $450
Couples 1 hour 15 professionally edited images $350
Family 2 hours 20 professionally edited images $500

Lengths, image counts and prices are Silva Studios Photography's published session details.

Family sessions run two hours for a reason that has nothing to do with the light: more people means more waiting, and small children need the slack. A maternity session has one or two adults who can be directed continuously, so an hour is genuinely enough. If you are timing a session around the light rather than the length, what time of day is best for photos in Las Vegas? has the start times month by month.

The short version

  • A Las Vegas maternity photo session is one hour of shooting, and about two and a half to three hours door to door
  • The warm light the session is built around lasts about 35 minutes in October and 40 minutes in late December, per the NOAA solar calculator for Las Vegas
  • Civil twilight adds roughly 26 more minutes of usable soft light after sunset in mid-October
  • Red Rock Canyon adds the most time: a 25-minute drive each way, a 13-mile Scenic Drive, and a timed-entry reservation from October 1 through May 31
  • An in-home maternity session is the shortest version at about an hour and fifteen minutes door to door
  • Two outfits fit comfortably in one hour; wear the one that matters most first
